My Windy May Day Experience Walking the Brooklyn Bridge
(Plus Tips for First Time Visitors)
If you're looking for one of the best free things to do in New York City, walking the Brooklyn Bridge should absolutely be on your itinerary.
During my trip to NYC, I finally experienced this iconic walk for myself on a windy day in May.

I took an Uber and had my driver drop me off at Washington Street & Prospect Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
The pedestrian entrance is tucked underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, where you climb a short flight of stairs and a ramp to reach the elevated walkway. It felt like discovering a hidden entrance, and it was a really easy way to start my walk.

My Brooklyn Bridge Walk
The weather couldn't have been more "New York in the spring." It was a beautiful May day, but the wind was definitely making its presence known! The breeze was strong enough to keep everyone holding onto their hats and jackets, but it also made the experience feel even more memorable.

Rather than walking the entire length of the bridge, I decided to walk to the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge and then turn around. Honestly, I thought it was the perfect option.
From the midpoint, I was treated to incredible panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, the East River, and the Statue of Liberty in the distance. I got all the amazing scenery without committing to the full crossing. You can even look down and see the taxis and traffic quickly going by.

Sometimes you don't have to walk the entire bridge to enjoy everything it has to offer. Turning around halfway gave me plenty of time to stop for photos, admire the historic architecture, and simply take in the views without feeling rushed. Also I got a break from the wind mid way too.
Tips for Walking the Brooklyn Bridge
If you're planning your own Brooklyn Bridge walk, here are a few things I'd recommend:
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
If possible, take an Uber to drop you off. I didn’t really see any parking areas.
Check the weather before you go because windy days can be beautiful, but they definitely add an extra challenge for photos & your hair looking nice.
Don't feel like you have to walk the entire bridge. Walking to the middle and back is a great option if you're short on time or simply want to enjoy the views. That was plenty for me to enjoy the bridge, take photos, & see the beauty of everything around me.

Is Walking the Brooklyn Bridge Worth It?
Absolutely!
Even though I only walked halfway across and back, I never felt like I missed out. The views from the middle are spectacular, the bridge itself is an architectural masterpiece, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in New York City. This is also a free activity to do in NYC!
Walking the Brooklyn Bridge gave me a chance to slow down, appreciate the city from a different perspective, and create one of my favorite memories from my NYC trip. Even with the strong May winds, I'd do it all over again.

If you're visiting New York City for the first time, add the Brooklyn Bridge to your list. Whether you walk the entire bridge or simply make it to the middle like I did, it's an experience that's well worth your time.
