If you're planning a trip to Alaska, whale watching in Juneau should be at the top of your itinerary. Juneau offers one of the best whale watching experiences in the world. Whether you're a first time visitor or a seasoned traveler, seeing humpback whales in their natural habitat is an experience you'll never forget. It is one I will truly never forget.
We did a tour on Get Your Guide called Juneau: Mendenhall Glacier Waterfall & Whale Watching Tour. This tour was amazing. It included riding a boat to view the whales, hot chocolate, snacks, a bus to the Mendenhall Glacier & they wait for you to hike Nugget Falls. Then they take you back to the ship port.
Within a short time of leaving the harbor on our warm boat, we spotted humpback whales. Watching them surface, hearing the sound of their breath, and seeing those giant tails disappear beneath the water was something I'll never forget. We even saw them jump out of the water multiple times.
They put on a show for us! I was truly in awe! The boat captain will be sure to take you to places to spot them.
Why Juneau Is a World Class Whale Watching Destination
Every summer, hundreds of humpback whales migrate here to feed on abundant schools of herring and krill. The calm waters and protected channels make it easier to spot whales than in many other parts of the world.
During a typical whale watching tour, it's common to see humpback whales breaching, tail slapping, and even jumping out of the water.
Best Time for Whale Watching
The prime whale-watching season in Juneau runs from April through October, with June, July, and August offering some of the most consistent sightings. I went whale watching in June while I was on an Alaskan Cruise.
What to Expect on a Whale Watching Tour
Most tours last between 2.5 and 4 hours and depart from Auke Bay, just a short drive from downtown Juneau.
Our tour left from Auke Bay and we were picked up near the dock of our cruise ship.
Many operators provide transportation from cruise ship docks, making it convenient for visitors arriving by cruise or staying in town.
Our Modern whale watching boat featured a large viewing deck, heated cabin, panoramic windows, and a knowledgeable naturalist guide who shared fascinating information about whale behavior, marine ecology, and Alaska's rich natural history while we were on the tour.
Tips for the Best Experience
To make the most of your whale watching adventure:
Dress in warm, waterproof layers.
Bring a camera or video camera.
Wear comfortable shoes.
Keep binoculars handy for spotting distant wildlife (if you want)
Listen to your guide
Stay patient and enjoy the scenery and calmness of the water between sightings of whales.
There's something truly inspiring about watching a 40 ton humpback whale surface just a few hundred feet away.
