Ally Abroad: A Few Magical Hours in Victoria, British Columbia

One of the last stops on our Alaskan cruise was the beautiful city of Victoria, British Columbia. While most cruise ships only dock for a few evening hours, don't let the short visit fool you.

I spent a few magical hours here and it was the perfect stop. Victoria offers stunning waterfront views, historic architecture, and plenty of local charm, making it well worth exploring.

Whether your ship arrives in the afternoon or evening, here's how to make the most of your time in this picturesque Canadian city. Our cruise ship arrived in the evening time for our few hours here.

Stroll Along Victoria's Inner Harbor

The Inner Harbor is the heart of Victoria and one of the most beautiful waterfronts in Canada. Just a short shuttle or walk from the cruise terminal, you'll find sail boats and spectacular views around every corner. We decided to take an Uber from the cruise port to this location. It allowed me to maximize all my time in this quaint town.

Take time to admire the iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel across the street.

Also across the harbor stands the impressive British Columbia Parliament Building.

Watch the British Columbia Parliament Building Come to Life

One of the highlights of our visit to Victoria was seeing the beautiful British Columbia Parliament Building twice! The first time was during daylight and then again after dark.

Be sure to snap a few photos of the stunning buildings during the daylight hours. The best photo ops are in front of the fountain.

As the sun begins to set, something truly magical happens. The entire building is illuminated with lights and it transforms them into one of Victoria's most iconic nighttime attractions.

Watching the transition from daylight to a glowing nighttime landmark was one of our favorite moments in the port. It was like two different buildings. This made the town seem even more magical.

If your Alaskan cruise arrives in the late afternoon or evening, be sure to time your visit so you can experience both views. Seeing the Parliament Building before and after they're illuminated is a memorable experience that perfectly captures the charm and beauty of Victoria.

Wander Through Downtown

Victoria's downtown is compact, walkable, and full of character. Spend some time exploring the streets filled with locally owned boutiques, souvenir shops, and more. I just loved exploring the streets and taking in the personality of this adorable city.

Don't Leave Without Trying a BeaverTail

One of our favorite stops in Victoria was grabbing a famous BeaverTail. If you've never had one before, you're in for a treat! A BeaverTail is a fried pastry that's crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and topped with a variety of delicious flavors.

The classic Cinnamon Sugar is always a favorite and that is the classic one I tried.

There's something special about enjoying a warm BeaverTail while strolling along Victoria's waterfront, watching boats in the harbor, and the Parliament Building in the distance. It was one of those simple travel moments that made our short stop in Victoria even more memorable.

If your cruise only gives you a few hours in port, make room for this iconic Canadian treat and you won't regret it!
